New total 62,341.
I never set targets as such but if I’m being honest, I did think it would be great to have collected 60,000 items of underwear and to have distributed 50,000 by the time of writing this, with it being the last “Talking Pants” of the year. So I’m over the moon to let you know that we’ve done even better – we’ve collected 62,341 and distributed 52,242!
Thanks to everyone for their donations during the course of this year. And this month I’d like to send a special thanks to Tracey Blackie, Julie Hyslop, Susie Becker, L Hughes, Beata Wojtczuk, Julie Grindley, Alexis Dinsmor, Heather Sutherland & friends of Linda McDonald, Karen Lennie, Moyra Allen, Janet Stevens and Caroline Mackey for their recent donations of underwear that helped us reach our targets. Thanks also Moyra and Peffer Paints for their monetary donations.
It’s been a busy old time since I last wrote. The Pantagon depot has been in full swing, I attended a Christmas fund raiser with the Women in Insurance Network and we’re certainly feeling festive at Smalls. But for some folk, Christmas will be a little unusual this year. As highlighted in my last newsletter, Sue Wilson and Stuart Watts, team NorthStars are finalising their preparations for taking part in the Dakar Rally in an old banger (their trusty Escort Estate) over Christmas and New Year. The rally is a 6700km road trip over 21 days crossing 8 countries and as they pass through some of these countries they will be distributing 4000 pairs of pants to hospitals along the way! Our thanks and best wishes to them both for supporting Smalls and for a safe trip. You can follow their adventures on Facebook (www.facebook.com/north.stars.
For those of you who have been with me from the start you will know that Smalls has evolved from my decision to start collecting underwear as a one off. I set a target of 2,000 at the end of 2009 and thanks to all the encouragement and donations from the Smalls supporters and partners, there has been no looking back. But I do want to look back to reflect on how much we have achieved together. Thanks to your generosity, I’ve never had to say no to any request I’ve received. I hope you all know how grateful I am and recognise that without your help and support Smalls would not have been able to help so many women and children in Africa over the past four years.
Smalls has grown so much and I’m pretty confident that with your help we will continue to grow and go on and achieve so much more. I can’t be sure what 2014 will bring, but my wish list for Santa certainly includes lots more underwear (!!), more fund raising, a couple of trips to Africa (desperately want to see our girls) and perhaps the return of the Gala Ball – well the last one was 2010! More on this will follow.
And that’s on top of all my very best wishes to you all. I hope you have a pantastic Christmas, and thank you so very much for all your support in 2013
